NFL skyrockets PA Sportsbooks To $645 million September

Numbers published by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on Monday clearly show the natural weight that NFL betting brings to the state’s gambling industry.

With $645.2 million in September handle ( a $282 million raise from August and 11.5% bigger than last year).

September's revenue was $75.3 million; MoM increased by 79% from August.

It was also the second-largest month ever for Pennsylvania online casinos (including poker), reaching $139.7 million in gross revenue. The record in gross income was held in March with $147.7 million.

$1 billion - is the expected threshold for online casino tax revenue next month.

Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released some numbers:

  • Hold: 11.7% (up 0.1% from August)
  • Percent of bets placed online: 92.4%
  • Promotional credits: $25.1 million
  • Handle: $645.2 million (78% MoM jump; 12% YoY jump)
  • Revenue: $75.3 million (79% MoM jump; 57% YoY jump) / Adjusted Gross Revenue (taxable): $25.1 million
  • Sports betting taxes in September: $17.1 million to the state and $1 million to local entities.

  • Sportsbooks in PA continue their strong year-over-year process of growth (YoY 11.5% handle increase) here in Year 4 of online NFL betting.
  • The summer rollercoaster ended with sportsbook generating the third-highest month in handle in 2022.
  • Sportsbooks impress everyone with their hold numbers, recording a second straight month above 10%. In June, Pennsylvania sportsbooks’ hold percentage was 5.8%
  • FanDuel wows with their consistency in maintaining a market share of 38-42% for online bets placed in PA but had much stiffer competition in September. 
  • In September, DraftKings Sportsbook followed FanDuel by just $5 million in total handle, the nearest in handle they’ve ever been since launching in November 2019. FanDuel still has the top on hold with 15.7% compared to DraftKings’ 8.2%.
  • PA took the No. 5 spot nationally in terms of sports betting handle, behind NY, IL, NJ, and NV.

  • Online slots got $104,824,119 while online table games - $32,177,304, both continue to show strong year-over-year growth, up 26.8% and 22.1%. They are also helping to raise overall gaming revenue growth in PA, which was up 7.9% year over year to $448.5 million.
  • For online casinos, September was their second-top month ever, posting $139.7 million in revenue. 
  • 18 online casinos currently operate in Pennsylvania, and still plenty of room to grow with more on the way.
  • $993 million in lifetime tax revenue for PA and local entities in just over 3 years were brought by PA online casino. They will soon run to  $1 billion lifetime.
